Rwenzori Mountain hiking tours

The Rwenzori Mountain is located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Rwenzori Mountains are the highest non-volcanic, Non-orogeny Mountains in Africa and the mountains are occasionally described “Mountains of the Moon” the term mountains of the moon comes from  a Greek merchant who travelled to East Africa and claimed to have found the source of the Nile.  Rwenzori Mountain hiking tours are one of the top activities done by most tourists who visit Uganda. The Bakonzo people have lived on the slopes of Mountain Rwenzori for many generations and this mountain is their center for their culture, the Bakonzo originally travelled from the Congo and settled at the slopes of Rwenzori Mountain about 300 years ago.

Best way to get to Rwenzori Mountain National Park

Getting to Rwenzori national park, you will take approximately 5 to 6 hour drive from Kampala city. Another way is to board a flight from Entebbe international Airport to Kasese Airstrip. Then approximately an hour drive to the national park.

Hiking Tours

The best time to hike the Rwenzori Mountains is during the dry season, which is June to August and December to February. The reasons why the dry seasons are the best it is because the roads to the park are easier to pass and hiking is more suitable in these seasons. It can take you approximately 8-10 days to climb Mountain Rwenzori, high altitude treks take you to the peaks above 4,000 meters.  There are quite a number of activities that can be done around Rwenzori Mountains. The most done activity is mountain climbing and other activities include Birdwatching, visiting Bakonzo communities and champing. Tourists come to visit this area because it is one of the Africa’s most beautiful alpine areas due its glaciers, waterfall flora and fauna.

How much does it cost to hike Rwenzori Mountain?

The cost of a trek depends on how much time you are spending in the mountains. And how many people you are travelling with. If two people are travelling together, the price ranges from $315 USD per person for a 3-day trek, to $2,000 per person for a 10-day trek. Per person prices decrease slightly when you have a group of three or more.

Accommodation

Accommodation on a Rwenzori trek is functional, but comfortable. The wooden huts in the mountains are made to keep out the heavy weather conditions. They also provide space for storing equipment’s that are required on different sections of the trail. The Rwenzori Mountains are home to a wide range of lodges, camps and hostels provide a range of accommodation both budget, luxury, mid-range which is comfortable and affordable to all visitors.
