Can a child of 12 years see gorillas?

A famous wildlife activity that is exclusive to Africa is gorilla trekking. Even more well-liked is mountain gorilla trekking, which is only feasible in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The number of tourists visiting the three nations rises annually. As more people become aware of the activity; therefore, gorilla permits may be very hard to obtain during some months of the year. Can a child of 12 years see gorillas? A common question among those considering a gorilla safari is whether there is an upper age limit for gorilla trekking, particularly if they want to include children on the trip.

In all three nations, gorilla trekking has a 15-year-old age limit, but in Uganda, as you will soon learn, there may be exceptions. The age limit for gorilla trekking is set by the several government organizations responsible for managing the national parks. In Rwanda, it is the Rwanda Development Board; in Uganda, it is the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Reasons why gorilla trekking age limit is set at 15 years

The age limit for gorilla trekking is imposed at 15 because younger visitors are thought to be children who might not be able to handle any unfavorable reactions from the gorillas. Despite being extremely peaceful and gentle animals, gorillas can turn hostile when they feel threatened or misunderstand the trackers’ behavior. Youngsters may become agitated or uneasy when a large silverback comes near them or acts hostile.

Furthermore, older tourists are less prone to overindulge. Compared to younger trekkers, they are more likely to abide by the park rangers’ policies and guidelines on gorilla trekking. People who are too old or unfit to go alone have frequently had to pay an additional $300 to $500 to be carried in a sedan chair. Gorilla trekking regulations prohibit cluttering the park, approaching gorillas too close to you (no more than 7 meters), and taunting or ridiculing them.

Gorilla trekking may not be suitable for very small children. Feeling bored or exhausted, they can ask to return to camp or slow down the tracking group. High-altitude regions are home to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park. Hiking up steep, mountainous terrain with extended exposure to sunlight may be necessary to locate the guerrilla troop. These kinds of circumstances can make it difficult for kids to finish the task. Older hikers are typically in better physical condition and have the stamina and resolve needed to finish the task.

Finally, very young children are susceptible to infectious disorders such as the flu (running nose) and cough. Mountain gorillas are particularly vulnerable to human illnesses. The consequences of contracting the flu can be fatal.

Activities for children below the age of 15 that can engage in

Bringing kids less than fifteen is prohibited in the park, and they are not allowed to track gorillas.  There are activities designed especially for kids who can’t trek gorillas. These activities include scout adventure activities, short nature walk safaris, and painting and artwork. While you enjoy gorilla trekking, your kids will be there, safely, under the supervision of park guides.
