Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda and Uganda

If you’re planning a primate adventure in East Africa, you may already be familiar with the thrill of gorilla trekking. But did you know there’s another rare and fascinating primate that shares the highland forests with mountain gorillas? Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda and Uganda

Golden monkey trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is a lesser-known but incredibly rewarding experience. These endangered primates, with their striking orange-gold fur and playful personalities, are endemic to the Virunga Mountains and a few forested regions in southwestern Uganda. Trekking to see them is a unique opportunity to witness rare wildlife behavior in one of the most scenic landscapes on the continent. Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda and Uganda

This blog post will walk you through everything you need to know about golden monkey trekking in Rwanda and Uganda, including where to go, what to expect, costs, and how to prepare for the experience.

What Are Golden Monkeys?

Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are a subspecies of the blue monkey. They are small, agile, and social primates known for their bright golden-orange patches on their backs and flanks. They live in large troops of up to 100 individuals, feeding on bamboo shoots, fruits, and insects.

These monkeys are only found in the Albertine Rift region specifically in the montane forests of the Virunga Volcanoes and parts of Mgahinga and Bwindi in Uganda.

Golden monkeys are endangered, and conservation efforts have allowed for controlled, non-invasive trekking experiences that support both the species and the communities surrounding their habitats.

Where Can You See Golden Monkeys?

1. Rwanda – Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is the most popular destination for golden monkey trekking in Rwanda. It is also famous for mountain gorilla trekking. The golden monkeys here live on the lower slopes of the volcanoes, particularly around Mount Sabinyo and Mount Gahinga.

The park is well-organized, and trekking begins from Kinigi Park Headquarters, where tourists are assigned guides and briefed before heading into the forest.

2. Uganda – Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

In Uganda, golden monkey trekking is done exclusively in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in the southwestern part of the country, bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mgahinga is part of the larger Virunga ecosystem and shares the same mountain slopes as Volcanoes National Park.

Although less visited than Rwanda’s park, Mgahinga offers a more intimate and peaceful experience, often with fewer trekkers on the trail.

Golden Monkey Trekking Experience: What to Expect

Start of the Trek
Your day typically starts early, with a briefing at the park headquarters. Guides explain the rules, trekking procedures, and what to expect.

Duration
Golden monkey trekking usually takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on how far the troop has moved. The trek is generally easier than gorilla trekking because golden monkeys often live in lower elevations and the terrain is more manageable.

Group Size and Viewing Time
Each group is limited to a small number of tourists, and you’re allowed to spend one hour with the monkeys once you find them. The monkeys are used to human presence and tend to stay in view as they feed and leap between bamboo branches.

Photography
Golden monkeys are active and fast, which makes photography a fun challenge. Bright lighting in bamboo forests can also create unique photography conditions. A camera with a fast shutter speed and good zoom is recommended.

Physical Fitness
Moderate fitness is sufficient. The trek may involve walking uphill, through mud or thick vegetation, but it is less strenuous than gorilla trekking.

Golden Monkey Habituation Experience in Uganda

Uganda offers a Golden Monkey Habituation Experience a more immersive version of trekking. Instead of one hour, you spend up to four hours with researchers and trackers, observing the monkeys as they behave naturally in the wild.

This extended visit gives you deeper insights into their behavior, social structure, and conservation needs. It is only available in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and is ideal for researchers, photographers, and primate enthusiasts.

How Much Does Golden Monkey Trekking Cost?

These prices do not include park entry fees, porter fees, or transportation costs. Always check with your tour operator or Uganda Wildlife Authority for current rates, especially for 2025–2027 travel.

Best Time to Go Golden Monkey Trekking

Golden monkey trekking is available year-round, but the best times to go are during the dry seasons:

• June to September
• December to February

These months offer clearer skies, drier trails, and better chances of spotting active monkeys. The wet seasons (March–May and October–November) make trails slippery, but they also offer dramatic green scenery and fewer tourists.

What to Pack for Golden Monkey Trekking

• Lightweight hiking boots or trekking shoes
• Long-sleeved shirts and trousers (for forest protection)
• A rain jacket or poncho
• Sunscreen and insect repellent
• A daypack with water and snacks
• Gloves for handling branches
• Binoculars and camera (with fast shutter and zoom)

Most importantly, bring a sense of adventure and patience—wildlife viewing is always a natural process.

Can You Combine Gorilla and Golden Monkey Trekking?

Yes, and it is highly recommended.

Both Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda offer the opportunity to trek mountain gorillas and golden monkeys from the same base. Many travelers opt to spend two or three days doing back-to-back treks, one for each species.

You can also combine it with visits to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Bunyonyi, or Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for a fuller Uganda or Rwanda itinerary.

Choosing Between Rwanda and Uganda for Golden Monkey Trekking

Both countries offer excellent experiences. If you’re already visiting Rwanda for gorilla trekking, adding golden monkeys is easy. If you’re exploring Uganda’s southwest parks, Mgahinga offers excellent value and fewer crowds.
