Locally, Mucunguzi means savior and is a breakaway of the Bweza gorilla family. This family was formed by a solitary silverback, Mucunguzi, by abducting members of the Bweza family.

Rwigi gorilla family

The Rwigi gorilla family is a breakaway from the Kahungye family. The gorilla family has its silverback leader as Rwigi. He had disputes with other silverbacks of the Kahungye family, so he left to start his own family.

 Bikingi gorilla family

The Bikingi gorilla family, whose habituation process started in 2015, is now available for trekking. It was formed after a family feud, and the disgruntled members departed but were seen in the company of unhabituated mountain gorillas. 

Nshongi Gorilla Family

Named after the Nshongi River near their territory, the Nshongi Gorilla Family stands as one of the largest habituated groups in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. With approximately 25 members, this family offers a diverse range of age groups, immersing trekkers in a captivating experience. Mishaya Gorilla Family
