Frequently Asked Questions About Rwanda Gorilla Tours
What is the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla tours?
The optimal times for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park are during the dry seasons: mid-December to early February, and from June to September. During these months, trails are less muddy and navigation is physically easier, though mountain rainforests can receive precipitation at any time of year.
How physically demanding are gorilla trekking tours in Rwanda?
Gorilla trekking ranges from moderate to highly demanding. Hikes occur at high altitudes (typically between 2,500m to over 4,000m) and involve ascending steep, muddy ridges and pushing through thick, untamed forest vegetation. Depending on the movement of your allocated gorilla family, treks can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours.
How close can you get to the mountain gorillas?
To preserve the safety and health of the mountain gorillas (who are highly susceptible to human airborne pathogens), a strict 7-meter (22 feet) distance rule is maintained at all times. On rare occasions, curious gorillas may approach closer; in such instances, your professional rangers will direct you on how to slowly and safely reposition.
Are permits required for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
Yes, gorilla trekking permits are strictly mandatory and highly regulated. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park issues only a limited number of permits per day to prevent environmental strain. The current permit cost is $1,500 USD per person. We highly recommend booking your permits several months in advance to secure your preferred dates.
What should I pack for a gorilla trekking tour in Rwanda?
Essential items include broken-in, sturdy waterproof hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts, and long trousers to shield you from stinging nettles. Pack heavy-duty gardening gloves (to grasp thorns safely), a lightweight waterproof rain jacket, high-strength insect repellent, and a daypack equipped with water, energy bars, and protection for your camera gear.
