How big is Volcanoes National Park?
Volcanoes National Park, a wooded region in the Virunga Mountains that border Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, spans 160 km² (62 sq mi). Compared to other protected areas in Rwanda that are home to five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains—Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo—Volcanoes National Park is very small. Gorillas Families in Volcanoes National Park
There are a number of gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park; some have been habituated for gorilla tourism, while others have been habituated for research purposes. Group of Hirwa Gorillas
Originated from several gorilla families that were already in existence, such as Group 13, Susa, and Sabyinyo. After departing Susa with two females, Munyinya the silverback gathered more along the way and eventually organized a group.
Gorilla group Amahoro
Amahoro, which translates to “peaceful,” is headed by the composed Ubumwe. Since the group mostly lives uphill, you must finally make your way into its area via a strenuous hike, but the ascent is usually worthwhile.
Group of Sabyinyo Gorillas
Is headed by Guhonda and is called after Mount Sabyinyo, one of the volcanoes. Despite having fewer members overall, this family is outstanding. This group is the closest to the park headquarters, so if it’s available, you should request it if you’re tired of tracking great distances.
Group of Kwitonda Gorillas
Is called “humble one” and is commanded by Silverback Kwitonda. This gorilla group moved to Rwanda “permanently” after migrating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Due to its extensive range in the top slopes of Mount Muhabura, it is a moderately challenging trip.
Activities in Volcanoes National Park
Gorilla trekking
Gorilla trekking is the most popular activity in Volcanoes National Park. Eight people visit a gorilla group each day for the tracking, which takes place once a day. It is anticipated that the tourists would arrive at the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) offices at 7 a.m. Where they will receive an orientation and be divided among the many guerrilla groups.

Mount Bisoke Hiking
